NYU TISCH DRAMA RESIDENCY:
urinetown
Book and lyrics
by Greg Kotis
Associate Director
Attilio Rigotti
Music and lyrics by
Mark Hollmann
Directed by
Carlos Armesto
Urinetown is a rough, raunchy, quirky, comic musical about greed, power, love, ambition, greed, corporations, and greed (did I say greed?). Gleefully poking fun at its own genre, the show is a complete, delicious satire on the American notion of individualism and optimism in the face of utter doom.
It's been 20 years since the fall of society. There’s a water shortage. Urine Good Company runs the government (through bribes, of course), and has instituted a major rule: everyone needs to pay to pee. If they don’t have the money, they will have to suffer. If they break the law, they are sent to Urinetown for the rest of their days. The story tracks the seeds of uprising against a tyrannical power, surrounded by a love story that makes fun of itself, subverting the nature of Broadway musicals themselves.
Inspired by Brecht and Kurt Weill works, the TISCH DRAMA STAGE production of Urinetown will be presented via livestream in the same vein as the NBC and Fox Live Musicals, with some performers telecast from the studio, and others coming in through Zoom. The musical's world will evoke the quirky sensibility of Terry Gilliam’s Brazil and the darker tones of The City of Lost Children, presenting a world of the past that was stopped in its development, and struggling to evolve in an ad-hoc, ramshackle manner. The sound of the piece will be reminiscent of “retro pop,” the source of inspiration coming from Caravan Palace.

Music and Lyrics by Charles Vincent Burwell
On May 4, 202, theatreC brought you a reunion concert of CUBAMOR, a story that adapts the award-winning film by Joshua Bee Alafia, into a musical journey of love, dreams, ambition, and magic.
Set against the backdrop of traditional Afro-cuban culture and hip hop, the musical tells the contemporary love story of two Americans who fall in love with two Cubans, forcing them to navigate the cultural, political, and historical divide between the two nations. This exciting live-streamed concert featured the extraordinary vocal talents of some the show’s former cast members, including Sydney James Harcourt (Hamilton), Nik Walker (Ain’t too Proud), Virginia Cavaliere (In the Heights US Tour), Perry Young (In the Heights US Tour), Doreen Montalvo (Mrs. Doubtfire), and Andre Ward (Rock of Ages).
Leading the team as director is Carlos Armesto (theatreC’s Producing Artistic Director), James Rushin (Island Song) as Music Director, and Attilio Rigotti (theatreC’s Associate Producer) as our video producer.
CUBAMOR has a long, vibrant history having had a reading at Ars Nova, a presentation at the Festival of New Musicals (presented by the National Alliance of Musical Theatre), and a production at the Village Theatre in Seattle.
Burwell and Sasser were 2019 Jonathan Larson finalists, and have been Ars Nova Uncharted Artists in residence. Their musicals include CUBAMOR, and the rock musical Bottle Shock! (based on the hit cult wine movie). theatreC's production of CUBAMOR will be the NY premiere of the piece.

Partygoers had surprise break-out room experiences guided by our host partners, which included some of New York’s Queer Voices/Influencers, Beleza Negra, MadDa, and Egyptian Trans Artist & Performer, Iman Le Caire. “We always strive to uplift our QPOC artist community and we are so proud to spotlight the Black talent within Siren Pack and Retro Factory again,” says Glow Job, our co-producer. “I’ve been so impressed by Retro Factory’s events and couldn’t be happier to partner with them,” says Shay Au Lait of Siren Pack. “As companies that proudly champion the art of marginalized communities, we couldn’t be more aligned in such a cool project,” says theatreC Artistic Director, Carlos Armesto.

REVISIT: 1983
A RETURN TO TO THE LEGENDARY GAY DANCE PARTY AT THE PYRAMID CLUB
CO PRESENTED WITH DANIEL NARDICIO PRODUCTIONS
Relive the magic of our inaugural Retro Factory pride party and REVISIT: 1983
In November of 2018, we set out with a goal to bring back elements from an era of the past, to relive moments from a specific time and place, but to also change it to reflect our story- a story that isn’t told or seen. This concept was brought to life with live music videos with a queer twist and with conscious effort to extend a welcoming hand to the underrepresented within the LGBTQ spectrum. Free to be and free to express- with an 80’s twist, our pride event was a success. Guests danced to the beats of DJ David Scott and were enveloped by pop-up dance performances by choreographer Breton Tyner-Bryan. The event was hosted by ChaddyBoyChad. Erika Astarita, Roger Calderon and Glow Job.

FARMED is a concert and interview series inspired by George Orwell’s Animal Farm. Through a suite of songs and deep community partnerships, FARMED conducts interviews with leaders of grassroots movements. Highlighting revolutions happening in cities around the United States, the interviews are set to music by Trevor Bachman and his company of singer/musicians. A local community choir is engaged from each city in which we perform to sing the piece in tandem with the core artists. FARMED events culminate in an evening of songs sung by an earth-shaking choir of voices, interviews with local organizers, and a performance in front of a live studio audience. All concerts are recorded for podcast. Apropos to today, the theme for this concert is Voting Rights. With special guest Suraj Patel.
VINEGAR TOM
By Caryl Churchill

Presented by Rutgers Theater Company
In association with Theatre C
October 5 - 13, 2018
Victoria J. Mastrobuono Theater
Mason Gross Center for the Performing Arts
85 George Street, New Brunskwick, NJ
VINEGAR TOM is an episodic story with songs chronicling 17th-century rural women who dare to be out-of-step with English society, and are consequently accused of witchcraft. Originally intended to have songs interspersed through the action, Caryl Churchill’s searing critique of society’s attack on women is vividly reimagined as a rock concert. In our production, Carlos Armesto has guided a band of Disruptors to mount the play as part of a concert performance. As the #MeToo movement gains strength, the impact of Caryl Churchill’s piece feels completely relevant and conveys a powerful story that resonates today.

Music by Shawn Magill and Seth Magill
Lyrics by Seth Magill
Book by Michael Federico

Produced by Carlos Armesto and Alecia Brooks
Erupting from its breakout NYC debut at NAMT’s festival of new musicals, On the The is a musical experience that pays tribute to the spirit of creativity and individuality in humanity's darkest hours -- a post-modern wanderlust rock event of apocalyptic proportions. An acting troupe defies an impending armageddon by performing a sci-fi musical about Marie Antoinette's journey on a time-traveling hot-air balloon. The pugilistic director hijacks the performance, and the company fights back, struggling for survival and hope, as the real forces of tyranny bang on the doors of the space. Think of the show as The Threepenny Opera and Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure spending a questionable night together.
